Mtwapa

Mtwapa....ask anyone who has visited the town before and they will smile...
I would describe Mtwapa as the Sodom and Gormorah of the mordern times...for those who do not know it,Mtwapa is a town in Kilifi, not far from Mombasa.

The town is famous for its pubs and most importantly call girls and the beach boys, its the only town in Kenya i know that you can walk half naked and noone will even question...and its the only town in Kenya that makes me feel over-dressed.
No other town in Kenya has so many biracial kids that speak fluent Swahili and broken English. Welcome to Mtwapa the town that never sleeps.

What irritates me most are the beach boys who do nothing all day they sit hoping they will get a white old lady to provide for them. As for the ladies, as long as you are a white male then count yourself lucky. Then there is a group of White men called "Kenya Kimbo" funny name.....they are called KK for they have been living in Kenya for so long that they have learned how to make a good bargain using the Swahili Language....

Mtwapa is the only town in Kenya that i would never want to raise a kid, am afraid that the only role models around are the beach boys and the call girls. As i walk through the streets of Mtwapa i feel as if am far from Kenya, because noone cares about Hiv AIDS here....its all about partying and girls and boys hoping they will nail a white man or woman with a fat cheque...

what happens in Mtwapa stays in Mtwapa.....

This is the point of view of an outsider. Stay in the town and get to understand the life in town. I agree with you on some issues. However your article is misleading. I've stayed in the town for more than 15 years and managed to obtain a PhD. What is this issue about raising kids?

Me too disagree with this! av been raised in Mtwapa for 19 good years n none of the call girls has been my role model. Mtwapa is a good town and visitors are spoiling it, painting it with abscene impressions and perception. It is a beautiful place and one of the best gifted town, with historical sites like Jumba ruins, its the only town with a floating restaurant in Kenya:The Moorings,to mention but a few!
If i may ask, have you visited the district educational officer and asked the performance of available primary schools in national exams? PUPILS Have always performed their best! MTOTO UMLEAVO NDIVYO AKUAVYO! SO IF YOU ARE AN IRRESPONSIBLE PARENT,EXPECT TO RAISE A NAUGHTY AND CHICKY KID!

I partly agree with the writer. Yes, in Mtwapa you can walk half-naked, like during summer in Europe. There are hustlers, no need to be annoyed by them, they don't harm anyone and ITS THEIR LIFE. Not all whites are Kenya kimbos, some are living and investing in Mtwapa, helping the community. Not all young women are call girls, some are actually making businesses.
In short, no denial that rate of prostitution is high. A percentage of both African and foreign men come to Mtwapa for call girls, though do not disturb nobody.
Having lived in Mtwapa for four good years, you learn not to meddle with other peoples lives or get annoyed by how other people choose to live.
In general most girls born and raised in Mtwapa are descent indeed, many "outside" girls come to find job, or in case they have to, do prostitute.
Where you rise children is a choice. How they are raised is a choice and parent's responsibly.
I'd choose to raise my children in Mtwapa so they can learn different life styles, where the world is heading to and learn to make their own choices in life.
Cheers

I totally disagree with the writer. I have been raised around Mtwapa and went to Shimo la tewa high school (now a National School which just before the Mtwapa bridge). I proceeded to Maseno university where I studied software engineering and am currently one of only 4 kenyans to be holding a ZCE certification. What people talk about Mtwapa is completely crap. There are a few night clubs with girls and boys as the writer suggests but this is a modern society's problem which is global. Don't try to put Mtwapa to another level which doesn't belong. Apparently, Mtwapa Elite Academy is the best school at the coast.
